Does Your Sewing Machine Need Repairs?

Before shelling out money for sewing machine repairs, you'll probably want to know that an issue is something serious and not a problem you might solve yourself. Here are a few tricks to try out before you get in touch with a sewing machine repair services provider.

Removing and Re-Threading the Bobbin

This is a possible solution that covers a wide range of problems, including bunching, bent needles, broken threads, and stitch skips. It's a good idea to examine the thread as you re-thread the bobbin, as you might be able to spot locations where it is fraying. If re-threading doesn't seem the resolve the problem, you may also want to attempt to use an entire new spool of thread just to determine if there might have been an unseen issue with the thread you were using. You should also check that the bobbin tension is correct.

Swapping Out the Needle

Sometimes it's hard to get a good read on what kind of needle might work best with whatever fabric you're using. Changing out the needle for a different kind, such as swapping a sharp one for a ball-point model, may help you address problems with needles breaking or fabric bunching. In some cases, you may need to complete rethink the material you're using, as some products simply aren't suitable for machine sewing.

Feed Settings

Feeding issues often create trouble, and addressing them can be tricky, especially if you're dealing with a machine you have recently acquired and are still getting a feel for. If it seems like the pedal isn't providing an appropriate level of responsiveness or is acting too touchy, check the manual and see if there are settings for the feed system. Should there be continued problems with feed after you've tried several adjustments, you may need to take your unit in for sewing machine repairs.

Oiling Components

There are a lot of components in a modern sewing system, and the simplest solution is often to just break out some machine oil and see if you can't quickly tune your machine up. The most obvious starting points are the bobbin case area and needle bar. It's a good idea to use a brush to clean out visible dirt or debris you might see. Once you've applied the oil, find a piece of scrap fabric and attempt to do a few stitches in order to judge the results.
