Three Questions to Ask Yourself When Buying an Office Chair

by Roger Hoffman

When buying new office chairs, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here, you'll find a few tips that can help you choose and care for new office chairs

How large is the office space?

Before you go out and buy the biggest, most luxurious office chair that you can find, stop and think about how large the office space is. If you get a chair that is too large for the space, you'll find yourself getting irritated and feeling overwhelmed whenever you're trying to move around the space.

Look for a chair that will fit the space. Use the measurements in the item description to get an idea of how much space the chair will take up in the office. If need be, get the measurements for the feet of the chair. Get some paper and lay it out on the floor to match the measurements of the chair feet. This will show you exactly how much room you'll have to maneuver around the chair.

How will the chairs be cleaned?

Office chairs go through a lot in a day—they're exposed to numerous viruses and bacteria, so they must be able to be cleaned. Leather or faux leather chairs can be wiped down with ease. The only downside to leather or faux leather chairs is that they are more prone to rips than upholstered chairs.

Upholstered chairs will be more difficult to keep clean, but it can be done. These chairs will need to be cleaned like you would clean an upholstered sofa—with a cleaning machine that will extract the dirt from inside the cushion. Between deep cleanings, disinfecting spray can be used to kill the germs that are lying in wait.

Do you need lumbar support?

The amount of back support built into an office chair will make a substantial difference in how long you can stand sitting in that chair each day. Look for a chair that has adjustable features, including lumbar support. If you can adjust the chair, you'll be able to get it set up to how you like it and have all of the support in the areas that you need it.

Don't just go out and buy any old office chair. Take your time to find the one that will fit your office, your needs, and provide you with the comfort that you need to get through all of those long days at the office.
